Regular Save Jersey readers followed the story of Abraham Lopez and Maureen Smith-Hartman in their quest to break-up the Democrats’ hegemonic control of Westampton Township Committee, one which was punctuated by extreme acts of pettiness and ugliness from the ruling party and its allies.
Well, the good guys prevailed, Save Jerseyans, at least here, with Smith-Hartman (1,046) and Lopez (1,022) overcoming incumbent Robert Thorpe (846) and his running mate Vernita Jones (854) in a hard-fought victory. The committee’s composition goes from 5-0 Democrat to only 3-2 once they’re sworn in. I would’ve loved to be a fly on the wall when notoriously intolerant outgoing mayor Carolyn Chang saw the returns!
The even better news? Abe and Maureen clearly understand that while the election is over, the macro-campaign to save their town from misrule is only just beginning. Winning isn’t just about vote totals or passing ordinances. It’s about opening minds and starting a discussion in the community, one which hasn’t experienced a serious Republican opposition in recent memory.
The victorious pair kicked off this promising new stage in township history on Wednesday by delivering pizzas to the entire municipal staff, including Westampton’s first responders:

Yay Abraham Lopez!
Looking for ward to real, positive change for the betterment for the people of the community of Westampton. We have responded with the expectation of positivity and relief from the burdens of the former administration.
