No, this isn’t The Onion.
Introduced on Monday, A3503 “[e]stablishes motor vehicle offense of unlawful use of hand-held wireless telephone by pedestrians on roadways,” Save Jerseyans.
Translation to normal person-speak: if this legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt (D-6) ever becomes law, pedestrians would be fined $50 for crossing the street at a crosswalk while using a smart phone.
That’s not all. Violators could also face 15 days in jail.
While crossing the street in an otherwise perfectly legal manner.
It needs to be said that Lampitt is notorious for passing nonsense legislation including regulations for entities and activities that don’t even exist in New Jersey. We’re not surprised that the DCCC expressed little interest in running her for Congress.
Can you imagine those attack ads? Her crazy bills would practically write them for us…
