CRAZY STUPID: N.J. legislator wants to lock you up for… texting while walking?

By The Staff | The Save Jersey Blog

No, this isn’t The Onion.

Introduced on Monday, A3503 “[e]stablishes motor vehicle offense of unlawful use of hand-held wireless telephone by pedestrians on roadways,” Save Jerseyans.

crosswalkTranslation to normal person-speak: if this legislation sponsored by Assemblywoman Pamela Lampitt (D-6) ever becomes law, pedestrians would be fined $50 for crossing the street at a crosswalk while using a smart phone.

That’s not all. Violators could also face 15 days in jail.

For texting.

While crossing the street in an otherwise perfectly legal manner.

It needs to be said that Lampitt is notorious for passing nonsense legislation including regulations for entities and activities that don’t even exist in New Jersey. We’re not surprised that the DCCC expressed little interest in running her for Congress.

Can you imagine those attack ads? Her crazy bills would practically write them for us…

  1. I think this is a reflection of the frustration drivers have when a moron walks out into the crosswalk with their head in their phones without seeing if a car has time to stop. Recently, pedestrians think just because they are in a crosswalk they can just go. In Hoboken, it has become ridiculous. Shoot the really stupid ones push their baby carriage out on the street first.

Look them up? No, but you should be allowed to smack them in the back of the head

  3. The fine should be higher more like 500.00 I have lost count of how many people have walked out into the street with their heads down texting and almost get hut becuase the pedestrian did not look before crossing against the RED light.

  4. I’m not in favor of the law, but people; you’ve got to start using your heads. Too many times I have seen people walk off the corner into traffic with their heads buried in the cell phone instead of looking.

  5. What a lucky guess. The same party that screams that women should be permitted to do whatever they want with their bodies. Everything but drink sugary soda, text while walking or simply exist without being forced to enter into a contract with a private company. ( Obamacare)

  6. How about a bill that makes it legal to run over pedestrians that are texting. Probably more likely to eliminate the problem… The bill this legislator is proposing is more likely to generate revenue. And that’s what NJ is all about.

  7. Note: Lampitt graduated from Johnson & Wales University with a degree in Culinary Arts and Management and, for the past quarter century, was employed by the University of Pennsylvania.

  8. You gotta love more Socialist freedom smothering government. What a waste tax money that this guy gets s paycheck PLUS RETIREMENT MONIES for patheticness. Take a hike pal. Address the real issues bozo! Debt and too much taxes and gov’t .
