One of New Jersey’s most influential Republican organizations won’t endorse Donald Trump when it convenes on March 30th, Save Jerseyans, according to a Sunday report from The Asbury Park Press‘s Erik Larsen

Chairman George Gilmore‘s reported hesitation to get behind the national GOP front runner is significant for two reasons:

(1) Trump’s ability to avoid the uncertainty associated with a contest convention might hinge on New Jersey. It’s difficult for Republicans to do well state-wide without Ocean County’s plethora of Republican votes. Gilmore’s position as unofficial dean of the GOP county chairs also sends signals to other chairs still weighing their options.

(2) Gilmore’s moves need to be analyzed in the context of an ongoing power-struggle with the Christie clique over the national committeewoman’s position. Is Gilmore genuinely concerned about Trump’s down-ballot impact? Or is his reluctance to automatically support Christie’s endorsed candidate part of a bargaining strategy? Maybe a little of both?

Only time will tell on both counts.

  1. Why would he want to leave the line vulnerable possibly causing a major primary in Ocean County has nothing to do with communicating with the state. You don’t have your facts straight. You would have a Cruz line verses a Trump line doesn’t take rocket science.
