How free are you, Save Jerseyans?
Well, according to the Cato Institute, somewhere to the right of Red China but to the Left of the rest of America.
The libertarian-oriented think tank just published its 2016 “Freedom in the 50 States” index; each of the 50 states is measured based on they perform in three categories: fiscal policy, regulatory policy, and personal freedom.
The methodology is damning for New Jersey policymakers:
“About 50 years ago, New Jersey was considered a tax haven,” Cato’s team explains. “It grew wealthy under that regime, but over the past two decades it has competed with California for the position as the second-worst state for economic freedom. As long as it is better than New York, it will probably continue to get tax refugees from that state, but more New Yorkers now move to Florida than to New Jersey.”
