ICE Arrests Guatemalan National Despite Resistance from N.J. County

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) officers recently bucked Camden County and arrested a Guatemalan citizen, Save Jerseyans.

The move came not long before newly-minted U.S. Attorney General Jeff Sessions threatened sanctuary cities with reduced funding and ICE named multiple New Jersey jurisdictions as less-than-cooperative when it comes to rounding up illegals.

Back on February 15, 2017, ERO Newark officers arrested the man in Magnolia, New Jersey, a Camden County suburb. Camden County had released the Guatemalan national from custody five days prior and “declined to honor a detainer ICE previously filed in the matter” according to the federal agency tasked with immigration enforcement.

ICE says the Guatemalan faces local criminal charges.

“As a nation, we must protect the integrity of our immigration system and the removal of illegal aliens, especially those with a criminal history-this is one of ICE’s top priorities,” said John Tsoukaris, ERO Newark Field Office Director, in an April 3rd statement on the ICE website. “ICE shares the county’s ultimate objective to protect public safety and national security while simultaneously preserving the critical community-police bond. As such, county jails that fail to work with ICE put their communities at risk.”

Increased ICE pro-activity appears to be indicative of a trend. This week, over on the West Coast, ICE agents detained an alleged prostitute who athorities claim administed a deadly drug shot to Google executive.

Overall, one estimate finds illegal immigration rates down 67% since Donald Trump took office.
