NJ-05: Bergen’s McCann makes move towards congressional run

McCann (second from back left) attends an event for Paramus Republicans.

It may still be 2017, Save Jerseyans, but the 2018 congressional midterms are already heating up.

What we learned today: Former Councilman John McCann has left his position as General Counsel to the Bergen County Sheriff presumably to focus on running for the 5th Congressional District seat on a full-time basis.

McCann, the leading contender to take on Congressman Gottheimer next fall, has been making the rounds and donating generously to local Republican campaigns this year.

Sources confirm that McCann has indicated to friends and allies that one of his main goals, if elected, is to use the seat to help raise money for other candidates, something freshman Democrat Congressman Josh Gottheimer is doing effectively right now.

When he enters the race, McCann will join perennial New Jersey candidate Steve Lonegan as well as Warren County Freeholder Jason Sarnowski in competing for the right to take on Gottheimer next fall.
