Menendez, who once threatened his political opponents, calls Trump “petty” over McCain flap

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Glaring hypocrisy from New Jersey’s senior senator?

This week, Bob Menendez lashed out at President Donald Trump after a difficult media cycle in which Trump was criticized over his response to Arizona Senator John McCain’s passing. Talking to CNN, Menendez accused Trump of showing how “little” and “petty” he was for failing to show the late senator a certain level of respect.

Menendez’s complaints of pettiness may ring hallow for some familiar with his own history.

After a mistrial in November of last year, Menendez lashed out at his enemies, real or perceived, channeling his inner Jersey party boss.

“To those of you who were digging my political grave so you could jump into my seat, I know who you are and I won’t forget you,” Menendez said to reporters standing outside of the Newark federal court.

Opponents of Trump had called upon the president to return the White House flag to half staff in honor of McCain.

Senator Menendez was ultimately ‘severely admonished’ by the Senate Ethics Committee and ordered to repay $1 million in gifts.
