Gottheimer, Malinowski back Pelosi for speaker

Gottheimer (Left)

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Two of New Jersey’s less senior Democrat congressmen have thrown in with Nancy Pelosi.

The former speaker and radical San Francisco leftist was nominated by her caucus by a massive 203-32 margin on Wednesday.

Among the “no” voters were Mikie Sherrill (D-11) and Andy Kim (D-3), the top incoming freshman targets for Republicans in 2020.

Voting yes? Most of New Jersey’s 11 Democrat members including freshman Tom Malinowski (D-7) who defeated Leonard Lance earlier this month and Josh Gottheimer who coasted to reelection this fall after unseating Scott Garrett back in 2016.

Things get tougher on January 3rd when the full House votes and Pelosi, presiding over a relatively slim 33-35 seat majority, simply cannot weather 32 Democratic defections. If she needs the vote? The pressure might be on freshman like Pelosi and Sherrill and fall in line and cast uncomfortable votes or risk the wrath of the new leadership.
