Op-Ed: Trump’s narrow New Jersey loss signals “a shifting landscape”

The 47th president of the United State of America, Donald Trump, pledged to fix the mess that Democrats created with their bad policies.

Americans of every race and creed agreed that progressive elitism has little regard for the realities of working families. Harris, Murphy and the Democrat party are telling working-class people the economy is great when it isn’t, that the immigration problem could only be solved by the Democrats who created it, and that we should ignore the constant reports of homelessness, drug abuse and crime despite being in front of our eyes.

Many of the issues that weighed down Vice President Kamala Harris on the national stage are the same policies embraced by New Jersey’s Legislative Democrats, who also – despite their misguided efforts – show little regard for the real-world impact of their ideology on families just trying to keep up with their bills.

As Democrats push further left, they seem to struggle more to bring their voters to the polls – both here and nationally. The results speak volumes.

Vice President Harris won the state by less than 5 percentage points, after Trump lost New Jersey by 14 points in 2016 and 16 in 2020. While the Associated Press called the state shortly after polls closed, other major networks waited until the early morning hours, signaling a tighter race than usual in New Jersey.

Trump won 12 of our state’s 21 counties, he beat all expectations among every demographic and carried the popular vote nationally. Meanwhile, New Jersey sticks with a government that is a mile wide and an inch deep.  It costs too much and it helps too little.

These results highlight a shifting landscape, with early voting momentum building among Republicans, setting the stage for a pivotal state election next year.

President-elect Donald Trump’s unexpectedly close performance in New Jersey and Murphy’s three-point win in 2021 show that the GOP is more representative of this state than Democrats believe. National success over the next year will embolden us even more than the presidential victory.

With Democrats facing headwinds and rising dissatisfaction among voters, Republicans in the Assembly will remain confident that we will be well-positioned to address the issues most pressing to New Jerseyans. Affordability, public safety and accountability.

Our caucus is ready. We’re focused on bringing real relief to New Jersey residents and restoring faith in our government. This is a real opportunity to chart a new course for our state and we’re ready to make that change happen.
