Election 2026: Massie decisively defeated by Trump-backed Gallrein

FRANKFORT, KY – President Donald Trump notched another major political win Tuesday night as Trump-backed challenger Ed Gallrein defeated Rep. Thomas Massie in Kentucky’s closely watched Republican primary.

With nearly all votes counted late Tuesday, Gallrein led Massie 54.4% to 45.6%, according to reported election results.

The race became a national test of Trump’s influence over the Republican Party after the president aggressively targeted Massie for repeatedly opposing key GOP priorities and publicly breaking with Trump on several issues. Trump blasted Massie as disloyal to the America First movement and urged Republican voters to replace him with a candidate who would fully support the administration’s agenda.

Gallrein, a former Navy SEAL and Kentucky farmer, leaned heavily into Trump’s endorsement throughout the campaign, presenting himself as a reliable MAGA conservative focused on border security, tax cuts, and backing Trump in Congress.

Massie, who had served in Congress since 2012, increasingly found himself isolated within the Republican Party after years of voting against leadership-backed legislation and criticizing fellow Republicans. While Massie maintained a loyal libertarian following, many Republicans viewed him as an obstructionist who complicated the party’s efforts to govern.

Trump’s involvement transformed the contest into the most expensive House primary race in American history, with outside groups and campaigns spending more than $35 million combined.

The result is expected to further solidify Trump’s dominance over Republican politics heading into the 2026 midterms. Massie now joins a growing list of Republicans who have been politically defeated after crossing Trump or distancing themselves from the MAGA movement.

Gallrein is heavily favored to win the general election in the deep-red 4th Congressional District, meaning Kentucky Republicans are likely to send a staunch Trump ally to Washington next year.
