National GOP group adds LD38 to its race watch list

New Jersey’s 38th Legislative District is traditionally one of the state’s few competitive jurisdictions every two years.

The Republican State Leadership Committee (RSLC) believes this year won’t be an exception to the rule.

On Thursday, the national Republican organization dedicated to supporting legislative-level GOP candidates announced its decision to donate $8,200 to LD38 State Senate candidate Kelly Langschultz as part of its “Right Women, Right Now” initiative, adding the Bergen-based councilwoman to its 2017 Race to Watch list.

“The constituents of the 38th Senate District deserve to be represented by a successful small businesswoman and common-sense problem-solver who won’t always resort to raising taxes and fees on middle-class families,” said RSLC President Matt Walter in a statement. “Unlike Bob ‘Gas Tax’ Gordon, Kelly Langschultz knows the taxpayers of New Jersey already pay enough in taxes to make up for years of budgetary malpractice by Democrats in Trenton. While New Jersey citizens are suffering through the transit ‘Summer of Hell’, ‘Gas Tax’ Gordon says the system is working ‘pretty well’ and voted to raise the gas tax by 23 cents this past session! Voters are sick and tired of out of touch politicians reaching into their wallets to pay for their out of control spending and that’s why we are proud to support Kelly Langschultz for Senate.”

This year’s LD38 GOP ticket has made transportation-related issues a top campaign priority given the suburban New York City’s district’s high tax rates and heavy reliance on public transportation.

NJ Transit itself continues to make headlines as its “Summer of Hell” continues; most recently, it was reported that the notorious agency had spent $1 million on a Penn Station PR campaign.

Langenschultz, a first term New Milford Councilwoman, is running with Glen Rock Councilman Bill Leonard and Saddle Brook Pastor Christopher Wolf, her Assembly running mates, in a challenge to entrenched Democrat State Senator Bob Gordon — leader of the committee responsible for overseeing NJ Transit — and his incumbent running mates Tim Eustace (D-Maywood) and Joseph Lagana (D- Paramus).
