GOP reengages culture wars in quest for House seats

Republicans had hoped that they could ride a “red wave” in November powered by inflation fatigue and disapproval of Joe Biden’s job performance. The current GOP leadership/operative consensus is that that’s no longer a safe bet in the post-Hobbs environment. The polling is also all over the place (and tied as of Wednesday) which certainly doesn’t help.

Some GOP campaigns are adjusting by moving away from those familiar supermarket-themed inflation ads and pivoting to social issues which work for Republicans; notably, the cause of parental rights which famously powered upsets in Virginia and down-ballot in New Jersey last fall in the wake of the Covid-19 pandemic lockdowns.

One such campaign is Bob Healey for Congress where the Republican second-generation businessman is hoping to upset Democrat incumbent Andy Kim.

“With school starting back, New Jersey parents need to know their kids are in the right hands. Democrat Andy Kim has an extreme back-to-school agenda: pushing radical sex ed curriculum, boys playing against girls in sports, and parents ignored and replaced,” declares the narrator in the new digital ad released Tuesday. “Andy Kim is wrong for our kids, and he’s wrong for New Jersey.”

All available data points to the district being lean-Democrat after redistricting but NJ-03 remains a competitive seat especially if a “red wave” ultimately materializes in November.
