Defending the Right to Choose Wrong

As a smaller-government conservative, I resolutely believe our nation’s “War on drugs” is a complete and utter failure.

The ubiquitous presence of drugs in our society and in our “art” (loosely defined to include the small and silver screens) proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt. Setting aside the fact that a majority of Americans support the marijuana legalization, from a moral perspective, there is no reason the government should prohibit us to indulge in intoxicants other than liquor.

As long as doing so is done without endangering others, in the same way that driving while drunk is rightfully proscribed, I say legalize, regulate (a dirty word to we conservatives I know), and tax (another dirty word).

Recently I was happy to hear that in our neighbor to the north, the Empire State, Governor Cuomo has asked the state legislature to decriminalize possessing small amounts of marijuana.

Around the same time, Mayor Bloomberg (former RINO pack leader) has decided that he wants to dictate the size of soft drinks people in the cities many eateries rather than twiddle his thumbs contemplates how 1% he is.

Save Jerseyans, New York is a strange place….it is now okay to transport pot but drinks over 16 ounces must now be consumed in paper bags. Obviously healthy living is better; that’s why it’s called healthy living, and with obesity rates off the charts across the nation everyone should applaud Mayor Bloomberg for taking a concern in our health, but isn’t government dictate and Mayoral whim just a bit too much? Even, for the sake of argument, accepting this was the proper role of government (it isn’t), is there any chance anyone actually thinks this will make people healthier?

While I’m all for steps toward legalizing marijuana, the Left creates a major contradiction warranting explanation when they say “marijuana good, Big Gulp bad.” Both are bad for you and both are our God given right to choose on our own… for better or worse!

  1. It is our God-given right to harm ourselves, but who picks up the tab when we do? Insurance companies spread their costs to all insured; uninsured go to hospitals so they can't be turned away and all taxpayers end up paying for that. Don't make it out like no one is affected but the people harming themselves. Bad choices affect us all.

  2. How jejune, ignore the central point that the left picks and chooses which unhealthy things should be accepted and which should be disdained by flights of fancy with no foundation in the classical liberal tradition. Instead, posit something so harmlessly unintelligent and bland that know one could help but agree, to bad it has nothing to do with the topic of the piece.

  3. Good day! Do you know if they make any plugins to assist with Search Engine Optimization? I'm trying to get my blog to rank for some targeted keywords but I'm not seeing very good results. If you know of any please share. Appreciate it!
