Lonegan Definitely Running

CONFIRMED: Former Mayor, Gubernatorial Candidate Will Seek GOP Nod

Steve LoneganPolitical consultant, campaign pollster and long-time Steve Lonegan ally Rick Shaftan says his friend will definitely seek the GOP nomination in this August’s special U.S. Senate primary to replace the late Frank Lautenberg.

“He is in,” Shaftan told me this morning.

Lonegan’s leading strategist reports the wheels are already turning, Save Jerseyans, and that “[p]eople are out right now getting signatures and Steve has raised more than $25,000 — all of which will be in his hand by tomorrow with a goal of $100,000 in the bank by the time petitions are filed on Monday.”

Shaftan also believes the timeline benefits Lonegan…

The real question is who else is going to get 1,000 valid signatures by Monday? Is there even anyone else in this thing?
You’ve got a situation where if there is a primary, the “line” is meaningless because there’s only one name and nothing else on the ballot.

Shaftan has a point. The Governor’s pick will still own frontrunner status for a number of reasons, and Lonegan is unlikely to be appointed by Christie given their history among other factors; however, in this odd format election, you can’t count out a tenacious politician with considerable name recognition among N.J. GOP’ers and a substantial e-mail list…

Stay tuned…

  1. Voting for Christie. Not some shmuck who lost to him and now is still a sore loser trying to ride his coat tails in.

  2. .

You Christie sycophants do realize that Steve Lonegan is running for the SENATE seat, not the Governorship, don't you? Or do you want Cory Booker to win that too?

  3. Outside Mayor of Bogota, hasn't he lost every competitive election he's been in? That includes two primaries for governor, one House race, and at least one try at County Executive if I remember right.
