Rome (and Newark) Are Burning

Newark, New Jersey

By Synnove Bakke | The Save Jersey Blog

NewarkDon’t believe certain people of the Liberal media, Save Jerseyans; conservatives really could care less if Booker is gay. Rome is burning and while Rome aka Newark is burning, Cesar is either out of town, hanging with celebrities or he’s hanging out on twitter and other social media.

I think US Senate candidate Mayor Cory Booker genuinely only cares about Cory Booker. I feel Booker’s reluctance and smart aleck answers to the press over the past week on the issue of his sexual orientation is a distraction from him being a politically empty suit, so let’s not take the bait, and focus only on his past as Mayor of the “burning Rome of NJ.” His record in Newark needs to be looked at.

Since he took office, murder, poverty, and violence have increased, the schools are failing, infrastructure is falling apart, and it was recently dubbed the most unfriendly city in the world by a travel magazine.

The Mayor in charge of this debacle of a city now thinks the voters should give him a shot at representing the whole state as a Senator in DC.

I’m a Jersey girl by birth, but before that I grew up in Norway, then lived in Brooklyn in my Au-Pair youth, and beyond, having traveled around on the subways and buses, and having on more than one occasion accidentally ended up in bad neighborhoods. I now feel I can accurately pick out what’s a bad neighborhood and definitely can opine on the scary feeling of getting lost in bad neighborhoods.

I was coming back from Newark airport with my sweet mom from Norway in the car one night. She had traveled for 12 hours, and was heavily jet-lagged. Of course I made a wrong turn and we accidentally ended up in a very seedy area of Newark. If any of you have heard of the “Philly roll” that’s exactly what I was doing at every red light and my heart was beating a mile per minute.

I was scared for my Mom and was very upset that this had to be part of her visit. What a shame that a city with so much potential has been neglected to this degree and parts of it is now at the mercy of gangs and criminals. By the way, my Mom could write a very interesting book about her visits to the U.S. She came here and experienced Hurricane Sandy on one visit. She was also here shortly after 9/11 while I lived in Belle Harbor, New York, in a neighborhood where we lost dear friends on 9/11 and also where a plane came crashing down only two months after.

She’s not easily shocked anymore at this stage of her life, but sadly, the once great Newark, New Jersey did shock her.

Booker and Obama were discussing youth violence in a closed meeting with other Mayors and law enforcement representatives last week – really? The very absent almost 7-year mayor of one of the most dangerous cities in the nation only now realizes he should do something? Why didn’t he make a stink about this sooner? If he cared about his city, why didn’t he pull a “Guliani/Kerik” and deal with his city’s crime and violence issues early on in his first term? I was living in NYC both before and after Mayor Guliani, and I will never forget how he transformed this amazing city. He’s living proof that a dedicated Mayor can make a huge difference on crime and drugs.

Bookers recent meeting with Obama is nothing but a cheap trick to show New Jersey (and the nation) that he really does care about his city’s poverty and crime. This is nothing but a publicity stunt so he can look better for the upcoming election. Come on, New Jersey, you can’t buy that cheap salesman trick, and be a headline believer!

In true liberal form on crime, Booker and Obama’s focus is on gun control laws. Being that New Jersey already is one of the strictest on gun laws in the nation, it’s of course the wrong approach. While Booker comes off as “doing something” with this meeting, he really is not. Those that are committing gun crimes on the streets of Newark are not going to visit the police station and politely follow directions on how to own a gun the legal way. Attacking gun laws and the Second Amendment is a misguided and common blame-shifter for liberal leaders that can’t see other solutions to crime under their leadership.

Don’t be shocked now, but I find it hard to dislike Cory Booker as a person. In fact, I can see why so many on the left worship him. After all, sadly, so many people care more about appearance, and feel good quotes, than the actual record of a politician. When I personally interacted with Booker on Twitter some years ago after he posted one of his many beautiful quotes about life, he gracefully thanked me in a direct message. I have to admit, I think he’s very charming, personal, cute and quite funny if you overlook his record as a politician. I would love to see him quit his day job and join his close donating, liberal Hollywood elite activists’ friends, Matt Damon, Eva Longoria and Ben Affleck and become an actor instead.

I did have a brief moment of hope about Booker in 2012. While Mitt Romney was running, he for one brief, but awesome moment spoke up on behalf of Bain and capitalism, but then quickly back tracked when the Left had a temper tantrum. I was elated, but then so disappointed. This shows us he will go lockstep with Obama and the left in DC on policies. Even though he may have some good views, and visions it doesn’t seem that he has the spine to stick with them.

A brutally honest NY Times article written in December of 2012 says it all: “Six years after the mayor came into office vowing to make Newark a “model of urban transformation,” the city remains an emblem of poverty.”

Like I said above, Save Jerseyans, while Rome is burning, Caesar is either out of town or hanging out on Twitter. NJ.com counted his tweets and got to a staggering 106 in one day (?). Who has the time to tweet 106 times in ONE day? He tweeted or retweeted 1,005 times in June alone.

Also, according to this article, “Of his 89 out-of-state days in the past 12 months, Booker left the city without a mayor for at least 47 days, according to documents obtained through a public records request. One resident said; ‘When’s the last time you did a town hall? Why do we have to go to Twitter to find out what you’re talking about?’”

Heading towards the upcoming special election on October 16th, Booker’s opponent, former Mayor Steve Lonegan, a consistent and conservative presence in NJ politics, must continuously pound Booker on his record in Newark and try to not engage when Booker and his liberal friends tries to distract from the real issues. If that doesn’t help, then God help us, we truly have become a nation of celebrity worshippers and deserve what we get.
