Another birthday for the last best hope of man

By Rich Pezzullo | The Save Jersey Blog

Happy Independence Day, Save Jerseyans; please take a moment to reflect on the fleeing nature of liberty (ours is less than 250 years old) and re-commit yourselves to preserving it’s blessings for our children and grandchildren.

America is mankind’s last great hope for freedom.

Before the American experiment, the last endowment of liberty was at the Red Sea, when Pharaoh’s army was destroyed.

americaMankind’s history of the next 3,000 years was of free societies being extinguished by great powers as they sprang up and tried to flourish for a few generations.

Some call that story of a miraculous freedom a legend, others treat it as fact.

What is neither disputed legend nor any less miraculous is that after those 3,000 years the spark of freedom was finally able to grow from flicker to a flame powerful enough to throw off the most powerful tyrant and military of the time.

Many dismiss my observation that our freedom is slipping away, but if we listen to ourselves as our families gather together, our stories are beginning to sound like the old folks telling the young “what America was like when men were free”.

If you catch yourself complaining about senseless rules and regulations making your drive, your shopping, your ability to do your job, run your business or attempt to raise and educate your children as you see fit being made more and more difficult, that is because you remember a time when that was NOT the case.

You’re acknowledging that you remember when you WERE free, and lamenting that you are less free today.

Trust your gut. That IS the case – and there is no better day than INDEPENDENCE day to reflect, share and commit to the cause of liberty and engage yourself in its defense.

If not you, then who? If not now, then when?

As you share your hot dogs and ice cream with the next generation, help them reverse the trend you see clearly. Give them the tools, education and confidence to defend liberty for THEIR children.

It’s the greatest gift you can give them.

I leave you to your holiday with Payne’s message about the value of liberty:

What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly: it is dearness only that gives every thing its value. Heaven knows how to put a proper price upon its goods; and it would be strange indeed if so celestial an article as freedom should not be highly rated.”

Every generation needs its patriots. They are grown, not born.

  1. you have echoed many of my thoughts/concerns here. But then, I am a senior so I do remember. The young today will know nothing better, but some day (hopefully) will realize how much they have lost and turn things around. These days, I am glad I am old!
