Fissures are opening up in the ground beneath the long-weakened New Jersey Republican Party, Save Jerseyans. Regular readers know we’ve seen this coming for many, many moons…

Today’s latest twist is only the most dramatic development to date.

“If he is going to go on the campaign trail with Donald Trump, he cannot continue to serve as our governor,” State Senator Jennifer Beck (R-11) reportedly told The Asbury Park Press editorial board on Wednesday. “The governorship of the state of New Jersey is more than a full-time job.”

You can read the full interview recap here.

Beck is the first state senator to publicly suggest that the Governor should consider resigning. Her decision to speak out comes as the Big Guy’s approval rating threatens to slide below 30% and six Jersey-based Gannett newspapers called for his resignation. Much of the latest criticism correlates to his decision to spend significant amounts of time stumping for the Trumpster after Christie’s own withdrawal from the race last month.

She’s not completely alone. Other Republican voices have begun to stir in recent weeks. Donors have bailed. Assemblyman Chris Brown (R-2) said the Governor “uses our families as a punching bag” after his verbal attack on a winter storm-impacted Jersey Shore mayor. Assemblyman Jack Ciattarelli (R-16) recently declared that the Governor should consider resigning. Former Governor Whitman is “ashamed.” [Updated: LD16 GOP State Senator Kip Batman added his voice to the resignation chorus on Wednesday per a report from PolitickerNJ].

What do each of the aforementioned legislators have in common? They’re all representing battleground districts. Brown impressively survived an all-out assault last November that took out his non-incumbent running mate. Beck and Ciattarelli lost two and one running mates, respectively, in an Election 2015 disaster that took out four incumbent GOP Assembly members. Beck, for her part, was among the first Trenton Republicans to formally come out against any gas tax increase within weeks of the results.

  1. BTW LT Gov Kim Guadagno is doing a great Job in the Gov.s absence. Senator Beck if you are serious, may I suggest you resign in protest. The Honest Hardworking Taxpayers of NJ will gladly accept it. Thank you and God bless America and NJ!

  2. Sen, Beck just stated what most people are thinking…..Christie should do the job he was elected and is paid to do….if he would rather hang with Trump for the next 9 months that’s fine….he should just resign as Governor first

  3. She is a great Senator, who I had the privilege of getting to know when my husband was the Mercer County Republican Chairman and I totally agree with her..

  4. Former Governor Whitman was a very inept governor but she is in a large part the pension problem.
This is the one big reason Christie is today unpopular is because her actions with the state employees pension fund.At the EPA she was a empty suit and was not qualified to be in charge of that agency.
The only reason she was awarded the job was because she went to Florida with a group of NJ State Troopers to oversee the counting the chad votes. What a joke. She should go with Hillary, two losers.
