Right now? N.J. ex-cons can work the polls but police officers are banned.

Social justice insanity still rules the day under Trenton’s Golden Dome, Save Jerseyans, but not without a fight.

Last Thursday, an ex-con appeared before the New Jersey Assembly Appropriations Committee and testified that police officers at polling places make some voters feel unsafe. Poor baby!

Assemblyman Jay Webber (R-26) called the ex-con’s testimony out for what it was: ridiculous.

“To my colleagues, can you understand why the people of New Jersey look at us and say, ‘You are turning the world upside down?’” said Webber. “Mr. Pierce has paid his debt to society, but he is an ex-convict who is allowed to be a poll worker yet you won’t allow police officers into polling places? You turn police officers into the bad guys who are suspect. Can you understand why people look at this law and say it’s completely backwards? That’s the problem.”

Governor Phil Murphy signed a bill back in January to ban police from New Jersey polling stations except in very narrow circumstances (including casting their own ballots). Even some hard-Left legislative Dems appreciate it was a dumb and sloppily-executed move, and a fix bill (A-2131) advanced out of committee to permit a modest police presence at schools and senior centers (upon request) as well as relaxing other related restrictions.

“We’re going to support this legislation, because it loosens the law, but if you can’t understand why people look at that law that we passed and that the governor signed in January and say, ‘You’re going the wrong way,’ you’re really out of touch,” Webber continued. “The safety and security of our communities exercising their right to vote and the innocent bystanders like children, teachers and seniors, deserve peace of mind, too. The small number of people who feel angst around police because of their past transgressions should not get to dictate security policy to the rest of their fellow citizens and stigmatize police officers in the process.”
