We may only be 24 hours removed from the launch of Biden 2024 (God help us), but next to no one is excited about it… at least excluding the staffers who will be on the campaign payroll.
The latest numbers are brutal. A brand new poll released by NBC News on Sunday reporrt 70% of Americans AGAINST the idea of Joe Biden running again next year. Only 26% want him to seek a second term in 2024. Meanwhile, over at the RCP average, Joe Biden is only attracting about 1/3 of the total pool of Democrat support in a hypothetical primary field. That’s garbage for a sitting president who’s failed to draw a serious announced intra-party contender to date.
Why so low? 69% in the NBC survey say it’s his age, and nearly 48% say his age is a “major” reason behind their opposition to his candidacy. No kidding! Biden is 80 and he’s an old 80; his mental slips, odd mannerisms and blank stares are increasing in frequency. As a result it’s increasingly difficult for even a Democrat-friendly media establishment to mask the full extent of the Commander-in-Chief’s rapid mental decline.
The potential upside for Biden: presidential general elections are generally viewed as binary choices.
The same NBC survey shows Biden somewhat more popular than Donald Trump (-10 rating vs. Trump’s -19) at this early stage of the cycle. Separate early polling reflects a close hypothetical rematch notwithstanding the incumbent’s problems (Trump presently leads the RCP average by 1.3%).
There’s your takeaway: America doesn’t want Joe Biden, but America still doesn’t very much like Donald Trump.
Will things be bad enough by fall 2024 (economically, overseas, etc.) for Americans to set aside how they feel about the Donald and vote their best interests? Or will they stick with the clearly incapable octogenarian whom they find slightly less detestable? Regardless of the consequences to their 401(k)s and national security?
