The Catholic woke movement continues to pick up steam in the era Pope Francis, Save Jerseyans. Columbus Day may be the latest casualty if the Camden Diocese (the Church subdivision covering most of Southern New Jersey) has any say in the matter.
On Monday, the Diocese’s Facebook page made no mention of Christopher Columbus (despite South Jersey’s huge Italian American population) but it did go loud-and-proud with an Indigenous Peoples’ Day meme.

Reactions leaned negative on the post. The Diocese attempted to defend itself, arguing that “there are several Native American tribes with ties to New Jersey, most notably, the Lenape tribe. Additionally, Saint Katherine Drexel, namesake of one of our parishes, is founder of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters for Indians and Colored People (now Sisters of the Blessed Sacrament), a congregation of missionary nuns dedicated to the welfare of American Indians and African Americans.”
What that has to do with failing to acknowledge Columbus Day – especially despite a very active local network of Knights of Columbus – went unanswered. The Diocese Twitter page offered a thank you to the Knights but, in true PC fashion, did not acknowledge the actual holiday.
Disappointed doesn’t begin to describe how I feel as a Catholic. I know many of you feel the same.
This isn’t an isolated incident. While Camden appeared to be the only New Jersey diocese rocking a woke message this year, all of the state dioceses promoted a pro-amnesty message from the pulpit last year during the height of the Trump-catalyzed immigration debate.
