I Am Woman: Hear Me Roar! (Not Squeak)

Suffragette protest banner from the WWI-era aimed at then-Democrat President and former NJ Governor Woodrow Wilson

According to www.democrats.org:

The Democratic Party and women share common values and priorities, including supporting our families, protecting our country, and advancing the issues that matter most to women of all ages and ethnicities.  President Obama and our elected Democratic leaders in Congress and across the country continue to work tirelessly to advance progress for women in every respect.  That’s why women vote Democratic.”

Okaaaaay…

Now, let’s talk about this SUPPOSED Republican “war on women,” shall we?  I am a little befuddled about the accusations that Republicans have placed women and their liberties under fire.  I don’t particularly feel like I am under attack by the party.

Or is this just the Democrats yet again deflecting attention away from their dismal record of the past few years to try and close the gender gap by publicizing misconceptions about how women are treated by Republicans and how much we have to lose should a Republican get elected to the White House in November?

I have done a lot of reading about the ways in which the Democrats want to attract women voters, and there are two major issues that they are highlighting as being at the epicenter of our overall concerns as a gender: (1) health care and (2) abortion.

The reality is, Save Jerseyans, that women are multi-dimensional beings…

For the majority of women, their interests are not that narrow. The Democrats try to cater to our demographic by placing complete focus on these issues in order to demonstrate that they CARE about us and our rights, that they have SYMPATHY for us, and that they want to HELP us.

But women today strive to achieve so much more than in years past.  We are independent and self-sufficient.  We don’t need anyone to watch over us or to protect us.  We want successful careers, we want to be wives and mothers, we want opportunities for growth and enrichment, we want to make the most out of our lives and we want to provide for our families.  We don’t want to sacrifice or sell ourselves short.  We want it ALL.  And we don’t need anyone placating us, talking down to us, or forcing us into more passive roles because they think that will make us more comfortable and secure.

Our interests expand well beyond the narrowly defined parameters of health care and abortion.  I can tell you that I definitely agree with Ann Romney when she said on Super Tuesday that women want JOBS.  Yes, we do.  We want and NEED a strong economy because this will make more opportunities available to us.  But this is not the message being communicated to us.

Since the Democrats have done women such a disservice over the past several years (oh yes, the group that they so badly need in order to re-claim the White House), they focus in on areas that they can still use to entice us (or so they think).  BUT….here are the facts!  The poverty rate among women is at its highest level in almost two decades.  5.2 million women are unemployed, and women have suffered disproportionately in this jobless economy. According to the National Women’s Law Center, of the 2.7 million jobs created since 2009, only 567,000 have gone to women.

My question to the Democrats is, do you really think that touting health care reform and talking about a woman’s right to choose are going to gloss all of that over?  I think NOT!  And here is another one for you.  Obama says that there should not be groups of men deciding on health care choices for women.  However, as per the Affordable Care Act (a.k.a. Obamacare), members-to-be-elected (surely some will be males!) will decide which medical treatments will get funding, something that will most definitely impact women, especially since they make about 80% of the health care decisions in America.  Sounds a bit like a contradiction between messages, doesn’t it?

Furthermore, I would go out on a limb to say that issues relating to national security and safety would be pretty high on the list for women as well.  The way that the Obama administration has been dealing (or actually, not really dealing) with issues in the Middle East makes me fear for my livelihood and livelihood of my family in the not-so-distant future.  Let’s face it, if we don’t have strong leadership to address our problems in the Middle East now, there won’t be a reason to place so much focus on health care and abortion in the future.

  3. I think women's health should be a top priority for all nations. It's sad to see how women continue to suffer all across the world. The recent death of Savita Halappanavar in Ireland is a case in point.
