Total NFL Political Donations Still Lean to the Right, But Some Super Bowl XLVII Figures Gave Big to Democrats
By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog
We took a look at the political contribution habits the New England Patriots and New York Giants last Super Bowl, Save Jerseyans.
Not much has changed over the past year. NFL owners/upper management continue to lean towards the GOP whereas the players themselves tilt towards Democrats (with a few notable exceptions like reliable Republican donor Peyton Manning).
What’s the story with this year’s Super Bowl teams? According to Business Insider, Baltimore Ravens owner Stephen Bisciotti leans Democrat though he donated just $5,000 to U.S. Senator Tom Carper (D-DE) as of September 2012.
San Francisco 49ers owner Jed York is more mixed. He donated to GOP House Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy in 2011, then turned around and gave $3,000 to McCarthy’s opponent in May 2012…
And here’s something interesting for your Paulbots out there: over at Philly.com, they report “former Baltimore Ravens defensive back Chris Carr has made contributions to both Rep. Ron Paul, R-Texas, the libertarian favorite and former GOP presidential candidate, and to Revolution PAC, the super PAC that has supported him.” He’s current a member of the San Diego Chargers as of 2012.
OpenSecrets.org has some more good FEC information for both the Ravens and the 49ers. Definitely worth checking out! Here’s just a few highlights from their research:
- 49ers tight-end Vernon Davis has donated to President Obama and the Democratic National Committee.
- Ravens President Richard Cass and his wife gave to Barack Obama, Harry Reid, Amy Klobuchar, Democrat Maryland state representatives… and Orrin Hatch?
- The mother of dueling brother head coaches John and Jim Harbaugh donated to Ron Johnson (R-WI) in 2010 and John McCain in 2008.
- The father of 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick gave to Republican Dick Monteith in his failed bid to unseat former U.S. Rep. Dennis Cardoza(D-CA) back in the 2002 midterm cycle.
Who cares?
@Justin All of the folks who've already viewed the post? Jeez… why so negative?
If the owner or players on your favorite team support and donate money to a candidate you disagree with, are you going to stop supporting them? Again I ask, who cares
