My alma mater’s student body wants to carry and it makes sense

By Matt Rooney | The Save Jersey Blog

I couldn’t be prouder of the student leaders at my undergraduate alma mater, Save Jerseyans, for doing what — USED to happen at American universities: catalyzing independent thinking!

cua gun carry resolutionOn April 8th, the Catholic University of America’s Student Association General Assembly passed “A resolution in support of student carry” in a 16 to 11 vote, asking the Administration of the Washington, D.C.-based school to permit students to carry firearms on campus based on recent highly-publicized changes in the law:

…Following the Heller Supreme Court decision in 2012, the Washington, D.C. City Council, carrying a legally purchased firearm is now legal in the District of Columbia, with a permit issue by Metropolitan Police Department.”

The Brookland neighborhood where CUA resides used to be a war zone; it’s come a long way in recent years as federal spending boosted the Beltway’s economy, but it’s still not the kind of place you can go walking alone at random hours. Yet according to The Washington Post, CUA administrators aren’t seriously considering acting.

That’s a mistake, one which makes me even less likely than before to answer their next fundraising appeal.

I am NOT saying we should start handing out guns to every co-ed indiscriminately, and I’m not saying students should be allowed to wave’em around in the air in the student union; I am saying that trained, law-abiding gun owners on campus are a better defense for the defenseless than unilateral disarmament of non-criminals.

The data is no debatable: gun control doesn’t prevent violent crime; it makes law abiding citizens more susceptible to crime

  1. We should all be able to carry. Law abiding citizens should not be infringed upon when it comes to rights outlined in the constitution .
