10:51 PM – It’s over… go vote for the winner in our web poll.
10:22 PM – Newt is winning tonight. His answers are clear, concise, passionate and conservative. No surprise; the Speaker has consistently done well in this format. His latest television ads? Not as impressive or conservative. Still expecting to see a modest bounce for Newt in SC after tonight’s performance.
10:11 PM – A little perspective since we’re past the debate half way point…
The RCP South Carolina polling average as it stood before tonight’s debate:
10:08 PM – What idyllic fantasy planet did Ron Paul grow up on where you can count on bad people to leave you alone if you leave them alone? Argh…
9:45 PM – Following @SaveJersey’s live Twitter coverage of tonight’s #scdebate? You’re missing out if the answer is no.
9:32 PM – Rick Perry just stopped short of promising to fire on Fort Sumter.
9:22 PM – Mitt is almost a little too relaxed/calm/sedated tonight (for my liking, anyway)… Santorum is hammering him over a SuperPAC television advertisement that the former PA Senator claims is inaccurate. It took Governor Romney a little too long to get online; he eventually gave a perfectly reasonable explanation towards the end. I think people want to see a little more fire out of Romney.
We’re not seeing any tonight.
9:09 PM – Now it’s time for the Governor of Texas to dump on capitalism. What the hell is wrong with these people?
9:05 PM – Newt Gingrich deserves the first #dodge text of the night. How is accusing Mitt Romney of being a “capitalist” a “legitimate” question?
8:39 PM – Tonight’s Fox News/Wall Street Journal GOP Presidential Debate (live from Myrtle Beach, S.C. @ 9 p.m. ET) is the final clash of candidates before South Carolina votes on Saturday.
It’s also quite possibly the second-to-last debate of any consequence until October, Save Jerseyans. Unfortunately, there’s one more slugfest on CNN this Thursday. It never ends…
South Carolina appears to be the last stop on this cycle’s primary express. After his numbers contracted a bit under a withering array of attack ads from Newt, Perry & Co., Mitt Romney’s lead has stabilized (and might be growing again?) in South Carolina. What’s more, Romney is expanding his lead in Florida and opening a commanding lead nationally; for the first time in this campaign, the frontrunner has cracked the crucial 40% mark.
Hence, tonight is likely the second-to-last opportunity for Gingrich or Santorum to land a blow, force a gaffe, or do something spectacular capable of reversing Mitt’s momentum. Not just in South Carolina but anywhere and everywhere in these states united.
That means it’s likely to get nastier. As if such a thing were possible!
