NEW POLL: 59% of New Jersey Voters Support @GovChristie… But Prefer Sweeney’s Tax Cut Plan (Or Do They?)

From Bloomberg (via Quinnipiac):

Registered voters approved of how the governor is doing his job 59 percent to 36 percent, according to the survey released today. That’s four percentage points higher than in February and up from a low of 44 percent in June. He scored highest ratings among Republicans, at 92 percent, and was at 64 percent among independents. Democrats disapproved, 64 percent to 30 percent.

So the trust is definitely there, Save Jerseyans. Barack Obama would kill for those numbers nationally. Sure, a lot can change in 18 months, but a Democrat opponent simply can’t win in 2013 if Christie continues to earn support from 64% of indies and nearly 1/3 of a hypothetical challenger’s own party!

Although interestingly enough, the Big Guy still has some work to do on the tax cut issue:

Given a choice, voters favor a plan by Democratic lawmakers to instead ease the state’s property-tax burden, 49 percent to 38 percent who prefer Christie’s proposal. Voters support by 57 percent to 24 percent state Senate President Stephen Sweeney’s bid for a 10 percent property-tax credit for households with an annual income of $250,000 or less.

My suspicion? Voters are justifiably much more concerned about property taxes, so when a pollster presents the choice as one between “property tax” relief and “income tax” cuts, the choice is clear in most folks’ minds. No contest. And I get it.

Of course nothing is that simple, Save Jerseyans, particularly in the Garden State. Please take the time to read our own Irwin Fletcher’s point-by-point analysis re: why the Governor’s plan is superior to the Senate President’s proposal. Then share it with a friend on Facebook!

  1. Change your headline to Sweeney's tax CREDIT not tax cut ! …I'll take a tax cut to a tax credit anytime ….it's harder for politicians to take away cash in your pocket

  2. I'm waiting for the breathless post about how Christie lied about the rail tunnel. Oh, wait, it will never come!
