Could Hurricane Isaac Ruin the Republican Convention?

It seems that history may in fact repeat itself in 2012. For the second consecutive GOP Convention in a row, there may be a major hurricane hitting the US mainland.

Back in 2008 the GOP decided to tone down its festivities in late August in order to be respectful to those Americans dealing with destruction at the hands of Ike. However, four years ago the Republicans were having their party safely in Minneapolis. This time it seems that the delegations in Tampa may be right in the hurricane’s path.

Tampa Bay has been the victim of 27 serious hurricanes since records started being kept in 1857. Six of those hurricanes occurred in the last weeks of August. According to the Washington Post, Tampa seems to be due for a hurricane, but GOPers shouldn’t be too worried yet. According to the models, a serious evacuation scale storm only has a 0.2 percent chance of happening.

But what if it does? Will it matter? Could it put a damper on the GOP’s chances for victory this November? As superficial as it might seem, it certainly could.

Traditionally both parties receive a poll bump from their conventions due to how heavily they are covered and how each party casts itself in a positive light and dominates the coverage for nearly an entire week. While Mitt Romney has received a nice poll bump in certain important states after the Ryan VP pick, it certainly has not been the surge that many expected from the announcement. Now, when people are finally beginning to really pay attention, Romney and the RNC has an opportunity to define the Romney-Ryan ticket without interference from Obama misinformation campaign.

That is, so long as that opportunity isn’t washed away.
