Memorial Day Weekend is typically a media “black hole” for American politics, Save Jerseyans, as citizens fire up their barbecues and politicians march in local parades, but after the U.S. Senate blocked three key portions of the PATRIOT Act on Saturday morning, Governor Chris Christie released a strongly-worded statement via his national leadership political action committee.

“The Senate’s failure to extend the Patriot Act is a failure of the US government to perform its most important function – protecting its citizens from harm,” said Christie who just last week rolled out a comprehensive framework to rebuild the U.S. military. “This is the unfortunate result of misguided ideologues who have no real world experience in fighting terrorism putting their uninformed beliefs above the safety and security of our citizens. This dysfunction is what we have come to expect from Washington, DC, but usually it does not have such dangerous and severe consequences.”

Christie is walking a fine line in a GOP that’s fighting a resurgent isolationist streak. He and primary rival Jeb Bush are in agreement where the PATRIOT Act is concerned but the larger-than-life New Jerseyan and Kentucky’s Rand Paul, another 2016 contender who led the charge against the PATRIOT Act this weekend, have repeatedly clashed over the last couple of years over government overreach in the name of national defense among other topics.
