Governor Chris Christie signed onto long-time tax reform advocate Grover Norquist‘s famous ATR ‘Taxpayer Protection Pledge’ last year during the presidential primary campaign, Save Jerseyans.
Does the Governor’s vocal support for a gas tax hike to fix the Transportation Trust Fund violate that pledge?
Assuming he ultimately signs something?
No, Norquist told a Save Jersey reader via Twitter on Thursday:
No.
NJ Assembly bill marries a larger sales tax cut (from 7% to 6%) with a smaller gas tax hike.
Net tax cut. https://t.co/vvbKy0w765— Grover Norquist (@GroverNorquist) June 30, 2016
Of course, Norquist addressed the Assembly’s tax plan as presented to the public and tax portion only. He’s not assessing debt or, more to the point, whether the sales tax (slated in full for the next governor’s term) ever actually happens.
