Democrats are hoping that an Alabama Supreme Court ruling declaring that in vitro fertilization (IVF)-generated embryos are children can reignite suburban abortion outrage heading into the fall election.
Both NJ-07 presumptive nominees are already exchanging barbs over the controversial decision.
Democrat candidate Sue Altman said the ruling is evidence that “Republicans like Tom Kean Jr. can’t be trusted to stand up to the extremists targeting reproductive rights and our fundamental freedoms.”
The Republican incumbent – who is pro-chocie – was quick to counter the charge.
“As a leader in healthcare policy for over two decades, I find the recent court decision in Alabama outlawing IVF deeply concerning. My longstanding commitment to ensuring access to and coverage of medical treatments, including IVF, underscores the importance of individuals having the ability to seek proper care, and I will continue advocating for policies that protect IVF,” Kean declared in a campaign release. “My record on this issue is clear and so are Sue Altman’s dishonest intentions. It is disappointing, but voters should expect her to continue to lie about me, even for the most minor political victory on social media.”

NJ-07 is considered a top 10 target district for both parties in the battle for control of the closely divided U.S. House of Representatives.
