Blue state “sanctuary” policies are driving border chaos and costing Garden State taxpayers dearly.
That’s the not-too-surprising verdict of one New Jersey legislator who just returned from the trip to the U.S.-Mexican Border and produced a report confirming the immense and growing expense.
“During my border trip, judges, border patrol agents and Texas state troopers unequivocally stated that our actions here in New Jersey are incentivizing and encouraging people worldwide to break our laws and access the taxpayer-funded benefits we’re providing,” said Paul Kanitra (R-Ocean), a freshman member of the Assembly.
According to Kanitra’s report, almost 1 in 10 state residents are illegal and cost $8,000 annually for services ranging from housing and medical care to education and legal fees.
On November 29, 2018, state Attorney General Gurbir Grewal issued a directive making New Jersey a de facto sanctuary state where local law enforcement is barred from cooperating with federal police – including ICE – in most immigration contexts.
“When you incentivize illegal immigration, that’s not going to solve the problem, that’s only going to attract more people to come,” Lt. Chris Olivarez of the Texas Department of Public Safety told Kanitra in a video of the trip (shared below).
“Stopping the issue in its entirety only requires a government committed to upholding law and order,” Kanitra added.
