Rep. Scott Garrett (R, NJ-05) is getting a strong money challenge from his Democrat challenger, Josh Gottheimer, but in the ideas department, the Republican incumbent insists his opponent is bankrupt.
“Rep. Scott Garrett is pleased to accept invitations from WRNJ Radio and Rabbi Steven Pruzansky to debate Democratic challenger Josh Gottheimer,” the Garrett press office announced on Wednesday afternoon. “This will be a great opportunity for voters in the Fifth District to hear directly from the candidates about each of their ideas, that is if Josh Gottheimer has any ideas of his own. So far, Josh Gottheimer has only demonstrated his abilities as a liar about Scott Garrett and an apologist for Hillary Clinton.”
Emphasizing Gottheimer’s deep connections to Clinton World remains a centerpiece of the Garrett reelection campaign strategy.
Garrett’s district leans rightward but Gottheimer has raised $2,899,64 to Garrett’s $1,347,631 according to FEC-filed reports; the competitors have around $2.5 million each in cash on hand and are presently hammering each other on network television with attack ads.
